Health Tips: Over-the-Counter Drugs for Back Pain

When Dealing With Back Pain

Relief for back pain may be as close as your medicine cabinet. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) can reduce back pain. Other OTC choices include acetaminophen (Tylenol) and aspirin. If those don’t work, your doctor can prescribe a variety of non-narcotic muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medicines. Most health providers avoid prescribing opioid or narcotic painkillers for routine back pain.
