Health Tips: Needing a Doctor for Back Pain Symptoms

health tips with a stethoscope and a notepad

Time for a Doctor

The American Academy of Family Physicians describes serious back pain symptoms for which you’ll need to call your doctor. These include:

  • Pain that goes down past your knee
  • Numbness in your leg, foot, groin, or rectal area.
  • Back pain with fever, nausea, or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

Other Warning Signs

Weakness or sweating are also possible warning signs of problems not related to the spine. If you lose bladder or bowel control, or the pain is so intense you can’t move, you’ll need to seek urgent evaluation. Or if several weeks have gone by and the pain still isn’t improving, it’s time to seek help.
