Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is common and will affect many people at some point. Professional athletes, sports enthusiasts, and people whose jobs require repetitive motion are more likely to experience shoulder pain from overuse and injury.

Shoulder pain, which can range from a dull, aching pain to sharp, stabbing sensations, is just one symptom of a shoulder problem. Other symptoms can include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the shoulder or arm
  • Shoulder weakness
  • Inability to move shoulder, or limited range of motion
  • Muscle spams
  • Shoulder stiffness
  • Shoulder swelling
  • Visible deformity (common with sudden injury)

Shoulder Pain Causes

Overuse, shoulder injuries, and wear and tear with aging can all cause shoulder pain, but the most common causes are:

  • Shoulder instability
  • Inflammation in the shoulder (from bursitis or tendinitis)
  • Arthritis
  • Shoulder fracture

Shoulder instability happens when the ball of the upper arm bone comes out of the shoulder socket, either partially or completely (dislocation). Nobilis Health care professionals know shoulder dislocations are usually caused by a sudden injury, but they can also happen from overuse. If the supporting structures (ligaments, tendons, and muscles) around the shoulder become loose or torn, shoulder dislocations can happen repeatedly. Shoulder surgery may be necessary to prevent future dislocations and arthritic shoulder.

Shoulder fractures are common from sports injuries, falling, and other trauma, such as car accidents. Most shoulder fractures can be treated without surgery. When bones in the shoulder become displaced and move from their correct anatomical positions, however, surgery is required to realign the bones and ensure they heal properly.
