Non-Surgical Herniated Disc Treatment Options

Spinal chord of human.

If you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc, you may immediately assume that you will need surgery to correct the problem. However, there are several non-surgical methods to treat this type of issue, and your doctor will thoroughly explain all of them. Here are just a few of the more conservative options that will more than likely be tried first.

Conservative Alternatives

These are just a few of the more conservative herniated disc treatment options that your doctor will probably suggest before recommending any type of surgical procedure.

  • Injections – There is a chance that your condition could be successfully treated through an epidural steroid injection. In many instances, this is all it takes in order to significantly reduce – or possibly even eliminate completely – the pain caused by severe inflammation. There is also a chance you may need to begin a rehabilitation program in order to lower the chances your symptoms will return.
  • Medications – There are several anti-inflammatory medicines, as well as painkillers, that could help reduce your discomfort. For example, if you are having trouble sleeping and also dealing with nerve pain, your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxant.
  • Physical Therapy/Exercise – In some instances, exercise could significantly reduce your pain in conjunction with heat and ice therapies to lessen the occurrence of muscle spasms.

While these options have proven to be very effective, there are some cases, unfortunately, where surgery is the only option to bring lasting relief. A microdiscectomy, for instance, uses a microscope to identify the affected disc and nerves, and to remove the part of the disc with the herniation.
