Jeff Foust – Attorney Hurst, texas

Jeff Foust - Patient SpotlightI’d been experiencing excruciating pain in my back for a little over a year. Like most people I just dealt with it until the pain began to really affect the way I lived my life. It just got to the point where I wasn’t able to enjoy the things I love to do; weight-lifting, mountain biking, and wild roller coaster rides with my two teenage sons. So, I made the decision to see Dr. Kevin James, an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon in Southlake.

Dr. James and I have known each other for years but this was the first time I’ve seen him professionally, as a patient. During my appointment, I was not at all surprised to see his professional demeanor; he is confident, patient, and caring. I was impressed with how compassionate and extremely knowledgeable he was, and how comfortable I was during the appointment. Dr. James and his staff’s professionalism and personal approach to patient care was admirable. I knew I was in good hands. After a very thorough examination, Dr. James diagnosed my condition as foraminal stenosis at C4-5, with myelopathy.

After my condition was diagnosed, Dr. James took time to answer all my questions. He then explained the various treatment options available to me. Dr. James did mention early on that he felt surgery was going to be the best option for my particular diagnosis, but as we discussed treatment options, he wasn’t pushing me to surgery or being overly aggressive about an operation. Instead he suggested we try some conservative approaches to try to help elevate my back pain. He personalized a treatment plan for me that included physical therapy, chiropractic visits, injections and medication. When the particular pain I was experiencing did not respond well to these treatment options, he and I talked again and decided to try a relatively new technology, the Mobi-C Disc Replacement Surgery.

Dr. James explained to me that the Mobi-C device is designed to replicate the natural motion of the cervical spine and restore the distance between the two vertebrae, helping to alleviate the pain and numbness associated with diseased discs, and my particular condition. In doing some additional research, I discovered that Dr. James had traveled to France to train with the designer of the Mobi-C device and was one of the first physicians in the area to offer this new technology to patients.

I had my surgery on November 19, 2014. Days later I was having Thanksgiving dinner with friends and back to work in 3 weeks. It’s now been 2 months since my surgery. The chronic stabbing pain in my back is gone and the numbness in my hands is getting back to normal. I still have some pain in my neck area but it’s slowly getting better; it’s really more of a dull ache now which is to be expected until there is complete healing. A sprained ankle takes 6 to 8 weeks. I’ve also noticed that the scar from my incision is minimal and blends into the fold in the crease of my neck. I’m still amazed that they can do this type of surgery through such a small incision.

As I continue my post-op treatment and rehabilitation, I’m excited about the progress I’m making. I’m not 100 percent yet but I know it’s just a matter of time before I’m completely pain free and back to doing the activities I love. And, I have Dr. James to thank for getting me there!
